The Trenches

Not invincible,
with flaws and secrets,
things that haunt in the night.
Feel pain,
heartbreak,
and hard times.

Shouldn’t compare
to the First World War,
never known the horrors
never seen the darkness
of warfare and death,
but we are
the trenches,
waiting for dawn
with breath drawn thin.

No suit of armor
no gun at our hips,
defenseless to fate,
we wait.
